What a Veneer Is — and Is Not
A veneer is a ceramic shell of roughly 0.3–0.7 mm bonded to the front of the tooth. It is not a crown. A crown covers the whole tooth and requires about 1.5–2 mm of reduction all round.

Composite or Porcelain?
Composite is sculpted directly onto the tooth in one appointment; it is repairable and cheaper, lasts about 5–7 years and stains over time. Porcelain (E-max) is laboratory-made, bonded at a second visit, resists staining, and lasts 10–15 years with roughly 95% surviving at ten years.

The Process, Realistically
Examination and imaging; a discussion of shape, shade and lip line; preparation and scanning or impressions; temporary veneers; laboratory fabrication; then a try-in where form, colour and bite are corrected — followed by definitive bonding.
The try-in is the appointment that protects you. It is also the first thing removed when a case is compressed into three days. Five to seven days is the realistic minimum.
Who Veneers Suit — and Who They Do Not
Suitable: structurally sound teeth with discolouration resistant to whitening, minor chips, small rotations, worn edges, or a diastema. Enough enamel must remain, because veneers bond to enamel.
Less suitable: heavily filled or root-treated teeth (a crown protects better), severe crowding (consider aligners first), and untreated bruxism without a night guard. Active gum disease or decay must be treated before any cosmetic work.
Living With Veneers
Brush and floss normally; veneers do not decay but the tooth beneath the margin does. Wear a night guard if you grind. Avoid biting nails, ice or packaging. Ceramic does not respond to whitening — if you plan to whiten natural teeth, do it before the shade is chosen. See veneer aftercare.
