When You Need a Crown
Crowns are used for heavily decayed, cracked or root-canal-treated teeth, and as part of a Hollywood Smile. For minor cosmetic changes, veneers may be enough.

When a Crown Is the Right Choice
A crown covers the entire tooth and requires reduction of about 1.5–2 mm all round. That is justified when the tooth is already compromised: a large existing filling, a fractured cusp, a root-treated tooth, or heavy wear from grinding.
On a healthy tooth needing only cosmetic refinement, a crown is over-treatment — a veneer preserves far more tooth.

Zirconia crowns typically last 10–15 years or longer. Ask which zirconia generation and which laboratory — the material name alone tells you little.
The Margin Is Where Crowns Fail
Crowned teeth still decay — at the margin, where crown meets tooth. A poorly fitting margin traps plaque and is the commonest cause of failure years later. Nerve inflammation can also follow preparation, occasionally requiring root canal treatment through the crown.
Meticulous flossing at the margin and six-monthly check-ups matter more than the ceramic brand.
Before You Agree to Crowns
Ask: why a crown rather than a veneer, onlay or filling? How many millimetres will be removed? Which material and laboratory? Is a night guard included? What is the warranty, and what does it exclude?
