What the “Turkey teeth” trend really means.
The “Turkey teeth” label often refers to over-prepared crowns from low-cost clinics — not a reflection of quality Turkish dentistry.

Responsible clinics recommend conservative veneers where suitable, not aggressive crown prep on healthy teeth.
Quality depends on the clinic — see how to choose.
The phrase describes a visible outcome, not a country and not a material: a row of unnaturally white, uniform, bulky teeth, produced by grinding healthy teeth down for full crowns. It became a label because the pattern was repeated at scale, quickly and cheaply.
The dentistry itself — ceramic crowns and veneers — is standard, evidence-based treatment used worldwide. What went wrong was indication: applying an aggressive, irreversible technique to teeth that did not need it.
A true veneer is a ceramic shell of roughly 0.3–0.7 mm bonded to the front of the tooth; enamel reduction is minimal. A full crown requires the tooth to be reduced by about 1.5–2 mm all round, removing most of the enamel.
Enamel does not regenerate. Once removed, the tooth is permanently dependent on a restoration. Crowns can be replaced with better crowns; the natural tooth cannot be restored. This is the heart of the criticism. See veneers vs crowns.
Three forces combined: aggressive price marketing, social media before-and-after imagery that rewarded extreme whiteness and uniformity, and treatment planned to fit a holiday rather than a mouth. When a “full smile in three to five days” is the promise, crowns are faster than orthodontics, whitening or minimal-prep veneers — so crowns get sold.
Patient surveys reflect the confusion: a majority who asked for “veneers” received or required full crowns, and a meaningful minority did not distinguish implants from veneers at all.
No — the provider is. Türkiye has highly qualified dentists, licensed hospitals and modern laboratories, and it also has clinics selling volume packages. The same is true of every large dental-tourism market. Outcomes track the clinic, the treatment plan and the indication, not the postcode.
What separates them: imaging before any price, a named treating dentist, a written plan, conservative indication, and honest aftercare. Read is dental treatment in Türkiye safe and how to choose a clinic.
Insist on X-rays or a CT scan before any quote. Ask, in writing, whether you are receiving veneers or crowns, and how many millimetres of tooth will be removed. Ask why that option and not a more conservative one — whitening, bonding, aligners or minimal-prep veneers often achieve the goal without irreversible reduction.
Refuse “full mouth in three days” timelines on healthy teeth, guaranteed results, and prices quoted before imaging. Our guide on the risks of cheap dental treatment sets out the economics behind those offers.
Do not panic, and do not rush to replace everything. Have the crowns assessed: margins, gum health, bite and any signs of nerve inflammation. Many cases are stable and simply need better maintenance and a night guard. Where a crown is poorly fitted or a tooth is failing, treatment is targeted rather than wholesale.
Keep regular check-ups with a local dentist and maintain meticulous hygiene — crowned teeth still decay at the margin. See what a treatment guarantee should cover.
