Pain-Free Root Canal Treatment

Save infected or damaged natural teeth with modern, comfortable endodontic care.

Root canal treatment removes infected pulp from inside a tooth, relieving pain and saving the natural tooth from extraction.

When You Need It

Severe decay, deep cracks or infection (abscess) may require root canal therapy. Afterwards the tooth is usually protected with a crown.

Is It Painful?

Modern root canals are virtually painless under local anaesthesia and actually relieve the pain caused by infection.

What Root Canal Treatment Actually Does

The pulp — nerve and blood vessels inside the tooth — becomes infected or dies, through deep decay, a crack or trauma. The treatment removes it, disinfects and shapes the canal system, and seals it.

The tooth remains. It is no longer alive, but it is functional, and it retains the root that preserves your jawbone. Nothing replaces a natural root. See root canal vs extraction.

It Does Not Hurt More Than a Filling

This is the most persistent myth in dentistry. The pain patients associate with root canals is the pain of the abscess that preceded it. Under modern local anaesthesia the procedure itself is comparable to having a large filling placed.

Persistent severe pain, an inability to numb the tooth, or a spreading swelling are reasons to be seen urgently — see dental abscess.

The Numbers

Root-treated teeth show roughly 97% survival and 93% success at ten years. Restored properly with a crown or onlay afterwards, ten-year survival is reported between 86% and 98%. Survival declines gradually — around 81% at twenty years.

Complication rates are notably lower than implants (about 4% versus 18%). Saving the tooth is not the compromise it is often presented as. See implant success rates.

The Restoration Afterwards Is Not Optional

A root-treated tooth is brittle: it has lost its blood supply and usually much of its structure. Left with only a filling, a back tooth frequently fractures — sometimes below the bone, where it can no longer be saved.

Back teeth almost always need cuspal coverage: an onlay or a crown. Front teeth may not. Delaying that restoration is the commonest reason a successful root canal ends in extraction.

When It Fails, and What Then

Failure usually means bacteria persisted in an untreated canal, or leaked back in through a defective restoration. Options are re-treatment (reopening and re-disinfecting), an apicoectomy (surgically sealing the root tip), or extraction with subsequent implant.

A failed root canal can still become an implant. An extracted tooth cannot become a tooth again. Where the prognosis is borderline, the conservative route preserves your options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is root canal painful?
No, it is virtually painless and relieves pain.
Do I need a crown after?
Usually yes, to protect the tooth.
How long does it take?
Often one to two appointments.
Root canal or extraction?
Saving the natural tooth is usually preferable.
Does it last?
A well-treated tooth can last many years.
Is root canal treatment painful?
No more than a large filling under modern local anaesthesia. The pain patients associate with it is the pain of the abscess that preceded treatment.
How successful is a root canal?
Roughly 97% survival and 93% success at ten years; with a proper crown or onlay afterwards, ten-year survival is reported between 86% and 98%. Complication rates are about 4%, against roughly 18% for implants.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Back teeth almost always need cuspal coverage with an onlay or crown, because the tooth is brittle and fractures easily. Delaying that restoration is the commonest reason a successful root canal ends in extraction.
