Dental Implant Healing Timeline

Week by week: what happens after implant surgery.

Implant healing follows clear stages from placement to the final crown.

Dental Implant Healing Timeline | EsteGo

Stages

Days 1–7 initial healing; 3–4 months osseointegration; then the permanent crown. See implants.

Patience Pays

Full integration ensures a lasting result.

The Stages, In Order

StageWhenWhat is happening
Soft-tissue healing2–6 weeksGum closes over the site
Early bone bonding6 weeks – 3 monthsBone begins growing onto the implant surface
Osseointegration complete3–6 monthsImplant can bear chewing load
Abutment + final crownAfter integrationImpression, laboratory, fitting
With graft or sinus liftUp to ~9 monthsGraft must mineralise first

Why It Cannot Be Rushed

Osseointegration is not glue setting. Living bone must grow into the microscopic surface of the titanium. Load the implant before that lattice is dense enough and the interface fails — this is the mechanism behind most early implant failures.

Immediate loading exists, but it means a temporary crown kept out of heavy bite, in carefully selected cases with excellent primary stability. It does not shorten biology. See same-day teeth.

What Slows Healing

Smoking is the dominant factor — nicotine constricts the vessels that carry bone-forming cells. Uncontrolled diabetes, certain medications (bisphosphonates, some immunosuppressants), radiotherapy to the jaw, and untreated gum infection all extend or jeopardise integration.

Poor primary stability at surgery, overheating of bone during drilling and premature loading are the surgical contributors.

What You Should Feel, Week by Week

Week 1: swelling peaks days 2–3, then falls; discomfort controlled by prescribed analgesia.
Weeks 2–6: gum closes; the site feels unremarkable. No pain should be present.
Months 2–6: nothing at all. An integrating implant is silent.

Pain returning after a pain-free period, a mobile implant, or pus are not part of healing. See the signs of a failing implant.

Planning Travel Around It

Because integration takes 3–6 months, implant treatment abroad requires two trips: surgery, then the final crown. Book the second trip only once your surgeon confirms integration, typically with a radiograph and a stability check.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an implant take to heal?
3–4 months for integration.
When do I get the crown?
After integration is confirmed.
Is healing painful?
Mostly mild and short-lived.
How long does osseointegration take?
Typically 3–6 months. Soft tissue closes within 2–6 weeks, bone begins bonding from around 6 weeks, and full integration allows loading at 3–6 months. With a graft or sinus lift it can extend to about 9 months.
Is immediate loading the same as a finished implant?
No. Immediate loading places a temporary crown kept out of heavy bite, in selected cases with excellent primary stability. The permanent crown still waits for integration.
Should an integrating implant hurt?
No. After the first week it should be silent. Pain returning after a pain-free period, mobility or pus are warning signs, not healing.
