Wearing a Hat After a Hair Transplant

When it is safe to wear a hat and which type to choose.

Wearing a hat after a hair transplant: off-limits in the first days, then only loose styles once cleared – pressure can dislodge grafts.

Many patients want to cover the area — but wearing a hat too soon can endanger grafts.

When and how

From around day 10–14 a loose, clean bucket hat is generally safe. Avoid tight caps that rub the grafts. See the recovery timeline.

Why hats are off-limits in the first days

Before day 10 the grafts sit loose. Any pressure or friction – a cap’s rim, a headband, a helmet – can shift or dislodge them. A lost graft does not grow back. Heat build-up and sweating under fabric also encourage folliculitis.

The usual schedule

PeriodHeadwear
Day 1–3Only the loose covering issued by the clinic – if any
Day 4–10Once cleared, a very loose, wide hat; briefly, not in sleep
From day 10–14Crusts loosened; loose hats usually fine
Helmets, tight caps, headbandsMuch later, once explicitly cleared

Timelines vary with the wound area – ask your clinic.

How to do it right

Choose wide, soft, breathable styles put on from back to front, resting nowhere on the recipient zone. Nothing over the head – the same goes for jumpers; use a front-buttoning shirt. In heat, choose shade over fabric. See sun and sweating.

For the return trip

You fly home with a shaved head, visible crusts and mild swelling. Headwear is understandable – but only once cleared and only loose. See flying after a transplant and treatment trip.
