Is it safe to fly home and what precautions to take.
Flying after a hair transplant is usually fine from the day after the first wash – cabin pressure does not harm the grafts.
Flying after a hair transplant is safe for most patients within 1–3 days of the procedure.
Wear a loose hat, avoid knocking the grafts and stay hydrated. Most international patients return home the next day. See recovery timeline.
Cabin pressure and altitude do not harm the grafts. Most patients fly home the day after the first wash, about 48–72 hours after surgery. What actually interferes is everything around it: luggage, cramped seats, dry air, alcohol.
Bumps and pressure: hand luggage overhead, headrests, a neighbour in a tight seat. Ask for help stowing bags and do not rest your head back. Swelling: it peaks on day 2–4, often the very day you fly. Drink water, no alcohol, and do not sleep with the head tipped forward. Dry cabin air: encourages itching. Do not scratch; saline spray after consulting the clinic. Headwear: only loose and once cleared.
An aisle or window seat away from through-traffic, no heavy hand luggage, a neck pillow for support (no contact with the recipient zone), medication in your hand luggage, not the hold. Carry a written summary of the operation and prescribed medication in case you need care at home. See treatment trip.
With fever, increasing redness with warmth, pus-like discharge, strong one-sided swelling or increasing pain – be examined before departure. One extra night is cheaper than a complication in the air. See aftercare and swelling.
