Why mild swelling happens and how to reduce it quickly.
Swelling after a hair transplant follows gravity to the forehead and eyelids, peaking on day 2–4 – a sign of normal healing.
Mild forehead swelling is a common, temporary side effect that peaks around days 2–4.
Sleep semi-upright, apply a cold compress to the forehead (never the grafts) and stay hydrated. See sleeping position and the recovery timeline.
The anaesthetic fluid and tissue reaction collect under the skin and follow gravity: from the recipient zone forward across the forehead to the eyelids. The peak is on day 2–4, usually resolving within a week. It is a sign of normal healing, not a complication – even if the mirror suggests otherwise.
Sleep with the head raised (~45°) in the first nights – the single most effective factor. Cool the forehead only, never the recipient zone and never directly on the grafts. Take the prescribed cortisone schedule exactly. Do not bend, lift or do sport – blood-pressure spikes worsen swelling. See sleeping after surgery.
| Day | Picture |
|---|---|
| 1 | Usually no swelling yet |
| 2–4 | Peak: forehead, often eyelids; pressure, not pain |
| 5–7 | Clear decline |

Have it medically checked for: fever, increasing redness with warmth, pus-like discharge, strong one-sided swelling, or pain that increases rather than decreases. Infection is rare but treatable if reported.
Strong one-sided swelling with visual impairment also needs assessment. See aftercare.
