When the scalp donor area runs out, beard and chest grafts can still deliver real, lasting coverage.
A body hair transplant (BHT) is an FUE procedure that harvests follicles from the beard, chest or other body zones and implants them into the scalp. It is the standard solution when the scalp donor area alone cannot supply enough grafts — typically in advanced Norwood 6-7 hair loss or in repair cases where earlier surgeries have depleted the back of the head.
BHT is not a replacement for a classic FUE hair transplant; it is an extension of it. The scalp remains the first-choice donor because its hair matches perfectly in texture and growth cycle. Body hair is added strategically to increase the total graft budget, and when it is planned well, the combination can turn an “impossible” case into a realistic one.

Among all body zones, the beard — specifically the area under the chin and along the neck — is by far the most valuable. Beard hairs have the thickest calibre of any donor hair on the body, often 100-120 microns versus 60-80 microns for scalp hair. One thick beard graft can create roughly the visual density of two finer scalp grafts, which makes beard hair extremely efficient for building coverage.
Beard follicles also have a high survival rate after extraction, comparable to scalp grafts in experienced hands, and the under-chin harvest zone is practically invisible once healed. For most patients who need extra grafts, the beard is tapped first and the chest only afterwards.
Chest hair sits at the other end of the spectrum: it is finer, often wavy, and grows in shorter cycles. That makes it a poor choice for building strong coverage on its own, but a useful tool for two specific jobs — adding diffuse density between existing hairs in the mid-scalp, and softening the transition around areas rebuilt with thicker beard grafts.
Yields from the chest are modest and depend entirely on how dense your natural chest hair is. Surgeons typically harvest only the thickest, most scalp-like chest hairs and leave the rest, so the donor area still looks natural afterwards.
Most patients never need body hair. A body hair transplant becomes relevant in three situations. First, patients with advanced Norwood 6-7 hair loss whose scalp donor area simply cannot supply the 5,000-7,000 grafts a full restoration would demand. Second, repair patients whose donor zone was overharvested or scarred by previous clinics — here beard grafts are often the only remaining resource for a repair hair transplant. Third, patients who want to camouflage old strip (FUT) scars, where beard hair implanted directly into the scar works remarkably well.
Good candidates need a reasonably dense beard or chest. During a free analysis, the surgeon assesses your body hair calibre and density and calculates a realistic combined graft plan before anything is scheduled.

Body hair keeps the characteristics of its origin after transplantation. Beard hair stays thicker and slightly coarser; chest hair stays finer and rarely grows beyond a few centimetres because its growth (anagen) phase is shorter than that of scalp hair. This is why placement matters so much.
The rule followed by every experienced BHT surgeon: body hair goes to the crown and mid-scalp, where it blends invisibly among scalp hairs — never into the front hairline. The first one or two rows of the hairline define how natural a result looks, and only fine, single scalp hairs belong there. A well-designed plan uses scalp grafts for the hairline and frontal zone, beard grafts for density behind them, and chest grafts as filler where needed.
BHT is performed with FUE only. The surgeon uses fine punches, usually 0.8-0.95 mm, adapted to the angle and depth of each body follicle. Beard follicles sit deeper and exit the skin at sharper angles than scalp hair, so extraction is slower and more demanding — one reason BHT should only be done by teams with specific experience in it.
Realistic numbers matter more than promises. A dense beard can contribute roughly 1,000-2,500 grafts from the under-chin and neck area. The chest typically yields 300-1,000 usable grafts. Combined with a scalp harvest, this can lift a total plan from around 4,000 grafts to 6,000 or more. Use our guide on how many grafts you need to see what different coverage goals require.
Beard donor sites form small crusts that shed within 7-10 days; mild redness can persist a few weeks on lighter skin but the under-chin location keeps it out of sight. Chest extraction points heal similarly, and because only scattered follicles are removed, the area does not look thinned out. Tiny white dots are possible but rarely noticeable through remaining hair.
In Turkey, a body hair transplant is usually priced as part of a complete package rather than per body zone. At EsteGo Clinic in Istanbul (Mecidiyeköy, Şişli), combined scalp-plus-BHT sessions typically cost between €2,500 and €4,500 all-inclusive — VIP transfers, hotel, medication and 12 months of follow-up included. Comparable surgery is commonly £8,000-£15,000 in the UK and $15,000-$25,000 in the US, largely because BHT demands long surgical hours. Our team has 15+ years of experience and has treated 40,000+ patients from 47+ countries. See the full breakdown in our hair transplant cost in Turkey guide.
Our surgeons follow the graft handling and donor safety guidance of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) when planning beard and body donor extraction.
