A rhinoplasty changes the shape of the nose – hump, tip, width or length. A good rhinoplasty always considers function too: the nose must remain freely breathable. Operating on aesthetics alone can impair breathing, so a functional correction (e.g. of the septum) is often planned alongside.
Open and closed technique
In the closed technique the incisions are inside the nose (no visible scar); in the open technique a small incision on the columella allows better visibility for complex cases. Which technique suits depends on the findings, not on a trend – an experienced surgeon explains the choice.
Realistic expectations: the revision rate
The nose is one of the most demanding regions. Even in good hands the revision rate is about 3% after a first operation – and considerably higher (around 11%) after a second. The final result appears only after up to a year or longer, because the swelling settles slowly, especially at the tip.
Healing
