Month-by-month: what happens from day one to final results.
The hair transplant timeline runs over 12–18 months – what you see before that is not the result.
Knowing the month-by-month timeline keeps expectations realistic during the growth phase.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| Weeks 2–4 | Shock loss |
| Months 4–6 | New growth 30–50% |
| Months 12–15 | Full natural result |

The key sentence first: what you see in the early months is not the result. Patience is part of the treatment.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| Day 1–3 | Surgery, first wash, possible swelling |
| Day 10–14 | Crusts fully gone |
| Week 2–6 | Shock loss: up to 90% of transplanted hair falls out (normal) |
| Month 3–4 | First new growth, often fine “baby hair” |
| Month 6 | About half the result |
| Month 8–10 | Clearly visible, hair thickens |
| Month 12–18 | Final result: density, calibre, naturalness |
Between month 1 and 3 many patients look worse than before surgery – the transplanted hairs have fallen and the new ones are not in yet. This is the normal course, not a failure. Whoever judges a result photo in this phase is judging shock loss. See bald again? and reading before-after.
Consistent aftercare, no smoking, no scratching, sun protection once cleared – and, with progressive native loss, medical support so the new density is not eaten away from behind.

Crusts gone by day 10–14, shock loss in week 2–6, new growth from month 3–4, half the result at 6 months, final result at 12–18 months.
Between month 1 and 3 many look worse than before – that is normal.
