Density / Touch-Up Transplant

Add fullness to a previous transplant or thinning area.

Hair transplant density is realistically 35–45 follicular units per cm² versus 80–100 native – yet good results still look full.

A density or touch-up session adds fullness to a previous transplant or a thinning zone.

When it helps

Ideal for extra density after an earlier procedure, depending on donor supply. See graft planning.

What “density” even means

Native hair has about 80–100 follicular units per cm². Transplanted density is realistically 35–45 FU/cm² – about half. Yet good results look dense, because the eye reads contrast, not follicle counts. Even 50% of native density can look full to an observer.

Why more density is not more result

Every graft needs blood supply. Pack channels too tightly and follicles compete for oxygen, survival falls – and 45 densely placed FU/cm² become 30 surviving. More density in the plan can mean less density in the result. The right question is not “how many grafts per cm²” but “how many survive”.

The four factors that set visual density

Hair calibre: thick hair covers more than fine – the strongest single factor.

Curl: curly hair overlaps area; straight hair stands off.

Hair/skin contrast: dark hair on light skin shows every gap; grey or light hair hides it.

Growth angle: shallow-set hair lies over the scalp and covers; steep stands off. See afro-textured hair and grey hair.

What this means for your expectation

You do not get your youthful density back – you get a credible framing. Demanding 80 FU/cm² demands a field that cannot be perfused and risks lower survival. And density in the wrong place is wasted: the front frames the face, the crown is barely visible in the mirror. See front or crown?

hair transplant density: key points

The eye reads contrast, not follicle counts. Packing channels too tightly lowers survival – more density in the plan can mean less in the result.

Calibre, curl, contrast and angle set the visual impression; density in the wrong place is wasted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a density/touch-up transplant?
A smaller session to add density to a previous transplant or thinning area.
Who needs it?
Those wanting more fullness after an earlier procedure.
How many grafts?
Often 1,000–2,000 depending on the goal.
What density does a hair transplant achieve?
Realistically 35–45 follicular units per cm² versus 80–100 native. The eye reads contrast, not follicle counts – about half the native density already looks full to observers.
Why not just place grafts more densely?
Channels packed too tightly make follicles compete for blood supply, lowering survival. More density in the plan can mean less density in the result.
What sets the visual density impression?
Hair calibre, curl, the contrast between hair and skin, and growth angle. Thick, curly, shallow-set hair with low contrast covers best.
