Sliding genioplasty (bone). Here the surgeon cuts the lower jawbone and slides the chin segment forward, fixing it with a small titanium plate. A chin implant is usually placed through a small hidden incision — either inside the lower lip or in the natural crease beneath the chin — under sedation or general anaesthesia. The operation itself takes around 30 to 60 minutes, and most patients go home the same day.
Expect swelling and mild bruising during the first week, with a supportive tape worn for a few days. Most people return to desk work within 5 to 7 days. Early results are visible once the swelling settles at two to three weeks, and the final, refined contour appears by around three months. The scars are hidden and typically fade to near-invisible.
Non-surgical alternative: chin filler
For mild cases, a non-surgical chin filler using hyaluronic acid can add a few millimetres of projection with no downtime — a useful way to preview the effect of augmentation. Its limits are honest ones: results last only 12 to 18 months, it cannot match the sharp, permanent definition of an implant, and larger corrections are not safely achievable with filler alone.
