Which orthodontic option suits you.
Braces handle complex cases; clear aligners are discreet and removable.

Aligners for discretion; braces for complex movements.
Both move teeth. Fixed braces apply continuous force through brackets and a wire and can achieve movements aligners struggle with: significant rotations of round teeth, bodily movement of roots, closing large extraction spaces, and complex bite corrections.
Clear aligners excel at mild to moderate crowding and spacing, relapse after previous orthodontics, and cases where appearance during treatment matters.
This decides more cases than the technology. Aligners must be worn 20–22 hours a day and removed only to eat and clean. Wear them fourteen hours a day and the teeth simply do not move as planned; the sequence falls out of step and treatment lengthens or fails.
Braces work whether you are motivated or not. For teenagers, or for anyone who knows they will not comply, that is a genuine clinical argument.
| Fixed braces | Clear aligners | |
|---|---|---|
| Complex cases | Yes | Limited |
| Visibility | Visible | Nearly invisible |
| Depends on the patient | No | Entirely |
| Eating | Restrictions apply | Removed — no restrictions |
| Cleaning | Harder; decalcification risk | Normal brushing |
| Appointments | Frequent adjustments | Fewer, often remote checks |
Teeth move for life. Whichever appliance you choose, the result is held by a retainer — usually a thin bonded wire behind the front teeth plus a removable retainer at night, often indefinitely.
Most “my orthodontics relapsed” cases are retainer failures, not treatment failures. Budget for retainers and for replacing them.
Straightening teeth with an appliance removes no tooth structure. Grinding crowded teeth down for crowns to make them look straight removes a great deal — permanently. Where crowding is the problem, orthodontics first is almost always the more conservative route, with veneers afterwards only if shape or colour still needs refining.
