The key questions to ask before you book.
A proper hair transplant consultation starts with findings, not a price: Norwood stage, measured donor density and progression.
A good consultation sets expectations. Here are the key questions to ask before booking.
A consultation that starts with a price is not a consultation. It starts with three findings: your Norwood stage, your measured donor density (follicular units per cm²) and the progression – how fast the loss advances. Only from these does it follow whether to operate today at all, with how many grafts, and what stays in reserve.
Who opens the channels and sets the hairline? Doctor or technician – by name.
How many patients does this doctor operate on my day?
What is your transection rate? Whoever does not understand the question does not measure it.
How many grafts do you remove – and how many do you leave me for later?
What happens if it does not grow? In writing.
Daylight photos (front, crown, back, profile), your medication list, medical history, your family’s hair-loss history, your age at first loss – and whether you take or took finasteride or minoxidil. These change the recommendation. A clinic that asks none of them is not planning – it is selling. See medication vs. transplant.
With active, fast progression under 25, the ISHRS advises stabilising medically rather than operating. Also with insufficient donor density, unrealistic expectations, or an unclear cause (alopecia areata, thyroid, iron deficiency). A clinic that never says “not yet” will not say it to you either. A remote WhatsApp analysis can give orientation – never a binding graft count.

Ask who sets the hairline, how many patients per day, the transection rate, and how many grafts are left for later.
A graft count cannot be set over WhatsApp – donor density is measured, not estimated.
