Correcting protruding ears
Otoplasty sets protruding ears closer to the head and reshapes the cartilage if needed. It is one of the few aesthetic procedures often sensible already in childhood (usually from about age 6, once the ear is grown) – often to prevent teasing.
What the procedure involves
Through an incision behind the ear (hidden scar) the cartilage is thinned, folded and set in its new position with sutures. In children it is often under general anaesthetic, in adults often under local anaesthetic. It takes about 1–2 hours.
Expectation and result
The aim is a natural result where both ears look harmonious – not set too far back (“pinned”). Small differences between the two ears are normal, as natural ears are not identical either. The result is permanent with correct technique.
Healing
