Hairline Lowering

Reduce a high forehead naturally with a transplant.

Hairline lowering can be done by surgical advancement or by transplanting grafts into the new line – the two differ in almost everything.

Hairline lowering reduces a high or large forehead — a transplant does this gradually and naturally.

Options

A transplant suits most cases, including women. See hairline design.

Two different operations for one goal

A high forehead can be lowered two ways: by surgical hairline advancement (forehead reduction) or by transplanting grafts into the desired new line. The two differ in almost everything.

The comparison

Advancement Transplant
Principle Hair-bearing scalp pulled forward, forehead skin removed Individual grafts placed into the new line
Result visible Instant After 12–18 months
Density Full native density 35–45 FU/cm²
Scar Fine scar along the hairline No linear scar
Donor material Not consumed Consumed (finite)

Who suits which

Advancement needs a mobile scalp and stable, non-androgenetic hair loss – typically an operation for women with a high but stable forehead. In progressive male loss it is usually contraindicated: if the line moves forward and hair falls behind it, you get a visible problem plus a scar. Transplant is the more flexible but slower route – and the only one in androgenetic loss.

Often the best solution: both

Some centres combine: advancement for density and area, then – months later – single-hair grafts in front of the scar to camouflage it and make the line irregular, therefore natural. A transplant-only lowering typically uses about 1,500–2,500 grafts. See temples and medication vs. transplant.

hairline lowering: key points

Advancement is instant with full density but leaves a scar and needs stable, non-androgenetic loss. A transplant needs 12–18 months and 1,500–2,500 grafts but no linear scar.

In progressive male loss, advancement is usually contraindicated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hairline lowering?
A surgical or transplant approach to lower a high or large forehead.
Transplant or surgery?
A transplant lowers the line gradually and naturally; surgery is an alternative.
Is it for women too?
Yes, it is popular for reducing a high forehead in women.
Hairline lowering or hair transplant – which is better?
Surgical advancement is instant and gives full native density but leaves a scar and needs a mobile scalp and stable, non-androgenetic loss. A transplant needs 12–18 months, leaves no linear scar, but consumes finite donor material.
How many grafts does a transplant hairline lowering need?
Typically about 1,500–2,500 grafts depending on the area. Transplanted density is 35–45 follicular units per cm² versus 80–100 native.
Is advancement suitable for male pattern loss?
Usually not. If androgenetic loss progresses behind the advanced line, it creates a visible problem plus a scar. Medical stabilisation is indicated first.
